Frequently Asked Questions - OB

1) May I take aspirin, Motrin, or Tylenol during pregnancy?

Answer...NO ASPIRIN, ASPIRIN DERIVATIVES, OR IBUPROFEN PRODUCTS. You can use Tylenol or Anacin 3.

2) May I use caffeine in pregnancy?

Answer...LIMIT YOUR CAFFEINE. Use decaffeinated coffees, teas, and sodas. Remember...chocolate has caffeine in it.

3) What may I use for indigestion during pregnancy?

Answer...If you have heartburn or indigestion during pregnancy, you may use any SALT-FREE antacid like Tums, Mylanta, or Maalox. In the 2nd and 3rd trimester you may use Zantac or Pepcid.

4) What can I do about constipation?

Answer...If you are constipated, use stool softeners: Citrucil, Metamucil, or Fibercon. DO NOT USE HARSH LAXATIVES. Remember...you must drink 8 glasses of water a day for these supplements to work.

5)How should I eat during my pregnancy?

Answer...Follow a well balanced diet. Make the most out of your calorie intake. Try to balance each meal with a protein and a complex carbohydrate. Eat foods that are high in fiber. For example, eat whole grain cereals and breads. Use bran when cooking. Fresh fruits and vegetables are important. Watch out for processed foods as they are high in calories and salt. Foods that are fat free contain a high carbohydrate value. Fast foods are high in salt and fat. The better you eat, the better you will feel. If you do not eat meat, make sure you get enough protein in your diet.

6) What is considered ideal weight gain in pregnancy?

Answer...Try to keep your weight gain at a maximum of 20-35 pounds. 

7) Do I need extra calcium in my diet?

Answer...Yes we recommend a supplement of 1500 mg of Oscal or Citrical...2 in the am and 2 in the pm.

8) During pregnancy can I eat fish, or raw fish such as sushi or lox?

Answer...Due to mercury content in fish it is recommended that you do not eat fish more than once a month and NEVER EAT ANY RAW FISH.

9) How much water should I drink each day?

Answer...Drink AT LEAST 8 - 8oz glasses of water a day.

10) How about smoking...can I have any cigarettes while pregnant?

Answer...ABSOLUTELY NO SMOKING DURING PREGNANCY. It is associated with increased maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality.

11) What about alcoholic beverages...beer or wine or cocktails?

Answer...ABSOLUTELY NO ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES DURING ANY TRIMESTER OF PREGNANCY. It is associated with increased maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. 

12) How about any recreational drug use?

Answer...NO DRUG USE DURING PREGNANCY.  It is associated with increased maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality.

13) Can I douche and what about using tampons?

Answer...NO DOUCHING OR USE OF TAMPONS/

14) May I get into a hot tub?

Answer...NO JACUZZI, SAUNAS, STEAM BATHS OR HOT TUBS. You can swim all you want, take warm baths or showers. SITTING IN HOT WATER WILL ADVERSELY AFFECT THE BABY. It can cause BIRTH DEFECTS.

15) How much can I lift?

Answer...Try not to lift anything much above 20 pounds...and if you do, bend at the knees and not the back.

16) May I exercise during my pregnancy?

Answer...Generally you can do almost anything you were doing before you got pregnant. Only in moderation. No horseback riding, running, boating, skiing, or four-wheeling. No Wet n' Wild, no MGM Grand rides or Grand Slam Canyon rides unless on the merry-go-round or the Ferris wheel. The ideal exercise program in pregnancy is PRENATAL YOGA.

17) What about my prescription and non-prescription medicines?

Answer...YOU ARE NOT TO TAKE ANY MEDICATIONS, EVEN OVER-THE-COUNTER PREPARATIONS UNLESS IT IS CLEARED WITH US FIRST. DO NOT DISCONTINUE ANY PRESCRIPTION MEDICINE UNTIL YOU HAVE DISCUSSED THIS WITH YOUR DOCTOR. CALL YOUR DOCTOR ASAP REGARDING ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT PRESCRIPTIONS.
